TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell Police Department K-9 named Max died after a brief illness Sunday, the department announced.
The news of Max's death was posted the same day Terrell Police Officer Jacob Candanoza was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop around 11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. Candanoza, 28, was sworn in as a member of the Terell Police Department July 15, 2024.
The department previously asked for thoughts and prayers regarding the dog's health while Max was evaluated at the Texas A&M Veterinary Center in College Station, according to a social media post from the Terrell Police Department.
Several hours later, the department posted an update stating that Max's condition was not survivable.
"Considering the diagnosis and current condition, the very difficult decision was made to let Max go peacefully," the department wrote.
A public memorial to honor Max will be planned later this week, the post states.
