Police identify carjacking crash suspect, handgun recovered

A middle-aged driver of a pickup truck involved in the wreck was hospitalized in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO — The suspected carjacker that was killed in a Tuesday crash that also sent the driver of another vehicle to the hospital with serious injuries has been identified, according to authorities.

Kerrville police officials say the suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Robbie Ybarra, robbed a Sonic drive-thru customer along Junction Highway before speeding towards downtown, where police tried to stop him. The man was able to elude law enforcement before later crashing into a pickup truck along the 1800 block of Sidney Baker Street.

The 64-year-old driver of the pickup was flown to San Antonio for treatment. Authorities say less than 10 minutes passed between the car being stolen and the suspected robber crashing it a few miles away.

Ybarra reportedly had a criminal history dating back to 1995 and was released on parole by TDJC in 2022.

The Kerrville Police Department said a handgun was recovered from Ybarra's vehicle, though they didn't know how the gun was acquired or why Ybarra was in the Kerrville area.
