Bexar Co. man who allegedly shot his parents before continuing streak of violence in Austin was schizophrenic, 'feeling impending doom,' records say

Shane James shot six people and hurt three others, including law enforcement officers, on a violent cross-county rampage in December, officials say.

SAN ANTONIO — The man jailed for allegedly killing six people across San Antonio and Austin on a violent December day may have been suffering a mental health crisis when authorities say he confessed to murdering his parents before driving north, records show.

An arrest warrant filed last month for Shane James, who faces murder charges in Bexar and Travis counties, also reveals his siblings told investigators that he suffered from schizophrenia and had been discharged from the U.S. Army in 2015 for a domestic violence incident in 2015.

James, 35, was arrested in Austin on Dec. 5, having allegedly killed his parents at their northeast-Bexar County home before driving there. There, authorities say, he shot a school police officer in an "unprovoked way" before eventually killing four others.

Following his arrest, records show, James "asked if (investigators) were able to get in contact with his parents," at which point he was told the Bexar County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) was in the process of doing so. It wasn't until later that they determined the man and woman found dead in Bexar County were his mother and father.

Officials have yet to determine a possible motive in the streak of violence, and James remains jailed in Travis County, though it's unclear where he might go on trial first.

According to arrest records, BCSO investigators interviewed James in the Travis County jail on Dec. 19, where he shared his account of what happened the morning of Dec. 5.

"In reference to the murder of his parents, Shane said he was feeling impending doom and it got worse," the document states. "Shane was watching YouTube videos and putting notes on his wall in anger."

James then told investigators that his father "made a joke" when he asked him a question, after which James went to get a .45-caliber gun, returned downstairs and shot his father twice, according to records.

He then allegedly told investigators that he went to his parents' bedroom, where his mother was, and shot her in the head.

"Shane didn't want his mother to suffer and shot her a second time in the head," records state. He then told investigators he dragged his parents' bodies into the bathroom, took money from his mother's purse and hit the road.

Deputies said that they had found blood marks on the kitchen floor and smear patterns indicating someone had been dragged. They later made their way to the bathroom, records say, where they found the bodies of 55-year-old Phyllis James and 56-year-old Shane James Sr.

The arrest warrant said James' account "strongly corroborates what BCSO discovered and observed at the crime scene" established at this parents' home. His next court hearing is set for August 20.
