SAN ANTONIO -- Deputy Chief Anthony Treviño will become the new interim chief for the San Antonio Police Department effective Jan. 1, 2015, the city announced at a news conference Friday afternoon.
San Antonio police chief William McManus is leaving the department after 8 1/2 years and a 40-year career in law enforcement.
McManus, who oversees a department of more than 2,000 sworn officers, is leaving SAPD to be CPS Energy's new Senior Director of Security.
"Chief McManus has developed an exceptionally positive relationship with the community at-large and is respected by one and all in San Antonio and Texas," City Manager Sheryl Sculley said at the time of his retirement announcement back in July. "He has more than earned this retirement."
According to his SAPD biography, Treviño joined the San Antonio Police Department in 1993. He has risen through the ranks of the department and is currently the Chief of Staff to the Chief of Police.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland Baptist University and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from American Military University.
"Even though it's an interim roll I do not plan to sit on my hands," Treviño said at Friday's announcement. City Manager Sheryl Sculley praised McManus' service and said that the search for his permanent replacement will begin in January.
Treviño is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police from the Police Executive Research Forum at Boston University, and the 236th Session of the FBI National Academy, in Quantico, Virginia, and a graduate of the City of San Antonio's Leadership Development Program.
Treviño is retired from the United States Air Force Reserves, where he attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
