BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A man was arrested Monday and charged with making a gun accessible to a child after a baby suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said authorities responded Friday night to the 7500 block of FM 78 for a crash. When they arrived, they found a 22-year-old victim with severe head injuries after they believe she was either hit by a car or fell off of one.

Salazar said first responders at the scene were also handed a 2-year-old baby boy, who was identified as the victim's son. The boy had a bandage on his leg, and after first responders removed it, they found an apparent gunshot wound.

Salazar said authorities couldn't get a clear story from the victim, and he said that in addition to her head injury, she appeared to be intoxicated.

The sheriff said the victim had taken the baby to a friend's apartment where a lot of people were "partying and intoxicated." He said preliminary information indicates that a gun was out near the 2-year-old, who somehow grabbed it and shot himself in the leg, but he wasn't sure that's what happened.

"If at some point we find that somebody shot this baby, either intentionally or meant to shoot somebody else and accidentally shot the baby, whatever that may be, I promise you we'll be upgrading charges to whatever it is we can. But once again, we've got all these idiots out here getting drunk and forgetting about the fact that they also happen to be parents, oh and their baby's in the next room, but they're more concerned with partying with each other and covering for each other, getting high, getting stoned, and they lose track of the fact that a baby's alone in a room with a gun."

Kobe Sullivan, 21, was arrested by BCSO and charged with making a firearm accessible to a child, tampering with evidence and injury to a child by omission. Sullivan reportedly also had several active felony warrants.

Salazar said Sullivan admitted that he saw the weapon near the baby, recognized it as dangerous and didn't do anything about it.

Salazar added that BCSO has not yet recovered a weapon, and asked anyone with information to contact them. He said it appears Sullivan and at least one other person attempted to clean up the crime scene and destroy evidence.

He said there are two other suspects in this case who have active warrants related to the baby's injury.

"Weapons and children don't mix," Salazar said. "A weapon should never be left within arms reach of a child at any age, much less a two-year-old."

Salazar said another man also was arrested on unrelated charges after allegedly giving a fake name to authorities at the scene.

This is a developing story.
