SAN ANTONIO -- New video captures Otis Tyrone McKane, the accused killer in the ambush of a San Antonio detective, walking into the Bexar County Courthouse less than 24 hours after the murder.
In surveillance video released Wednesday by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, Christian Chanel Fields and 31-year-old Otis Tyrone McKane can be seen walking through metal detectors then through the courthouse on Monday at 9:54 a.m.
While still the subject of a manhunt, the suspect and his soon-to-be wife walked right past security and tied the knot.
Administrators with the Bexar County Clerk's Office told KENS 5 that normally there's a 72-hour waiting period when getting a marriage certificate.
Military members are the exception.
However, if a couple requests to waive the waiting period, a judge must sign off on it if he or she believes there's good cause.
The clerk’s office says that the couple requested to be married immediately and Judge Walden Shelton signed the waiver and performed the ceremony.
The judge did not immediately respond to KENS 5’s request for an interview. McKane's court-appointed attorneys were unavailable for comment as well.
In the meantime, the memorial for Detective Benjamin Marconi attracts visitors nonstop.
"As I came this way, I saw [this woman] with a rosary and I said, 'Do you want to pray together?'" said Julie Ann Kupowski, who joined in prayer with a stranger at Detective Benjamin Marconi's memorial outside Public Safety Headquarters.
The public is laying more flowers and lighting more candles to say thanks and offer a prayer for the Marconi family before the Thanksgiving holiday.
"Our hearts go out, especially to the families this time of year. It's very sad," said Yvonne Rosas, who bought a candle at San Fernando Cathedral to bring to the memorial.
A lot of folks are wondering if Christian Fields was the woman inside the white Buick with McKane at the time of arrest. SAPD says that they aren't releasing any further details in the investigation.
The district attorney's office told KENS 5 that Fields will still be able to take the stand in trial, but Texas laws protect discussions involving any conversations after marriage. Any conversations before the couple got married is free game for prosecutors, though.
McKane is due in court for his arraignment on December 22.
