CRYSTAL CITY, Texas -- A Zavala County Jail supervisor told KENS 5 the mayor of Crystal City had a controlled substance on him when he was taken into custody last night, and he now faces a felony drug charge.

Mayor Ricardo Lopez now faces charges of possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after a scuffle during a packed city council meeting Tuesday night.

He and several members of council, both current and former, are under indictment facing federal bribery charges.

Crystal City residents have called on Lopez to resign immediately, but he claims he has five days to do so.

The only action taken at the council meeting Tuesday night was a decision to suspend the city manager, James Jonas without pay.

Another council meeting is set for Wednesday to continue the recall proceedings.
