SAN ANTONIO -- Tonight, East Central Stadium glowed in memory of Jeremiah Gonzalez.
The 17-year-old was well known in his town. He played football and was part of the school's ROTC program.
"I think it going to be hard for us to let him go, but he did make so much of a difference," said Ariana Castillo, a fellow ROTC member. "All the people here are a testimony of the lives that he's impacted."
The football stadium was filled with students, holding candles, and crying as pictures of Gonzalez's high school career were shown on the big screen at the stadium.
Last Tuesday morning, authorities say Gonzalez was on Loop 1604, north of highway 87. He hit a school bus with six middle school kids on board. They were not hurt, but the crash caused a pile-up. A man in one of the other cars was killed. So was No. 45 from East Central High.
Gonzalez was more than just a popular kid. His friends and teachers remembered him as a person of faith, far deeper than his 17 years of life would let on. Gonzalez's family will have to lean on that faith heavily as they try to move forward without him.
