CORSICANA, Texas — Corsicana ISD released more information Monday about an incident involving a student that caused an assistant principal at Collins Intermediate School to be flown to a hospital.
Candra Rogers was injured during a "disruption in a classroom" on Thursday, Aug. 15, school officials said. School officials initially released few details about what happened, causing some parents to express concerns about the safety of the school.
School officials confirmed Monday that Rogers "sustained a severe injury to her eye," according to a press release. Rogers was released from the hospital by Aug. 20 and continues to recover at home, the school district confirmed.
“I am leaning heavily into my faith, and I am grateful for all of the support that I have received,” Rogers said.
There is no estimate for when she will return to work, the district said. She will address the media Tuesday, Aug. 27 to deliver a statement, according to the release. Rogers joined the Corsicana district last semester, officials said. Her husband, Eugene Rogers, is in his first season as the Corsicana High School football coach.
One student was taken into custody following the incident. School leaders confirmed Monday that the student "has been restricted to a specific location and cannot be on campus," according to the release.
The incident was referred to the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office and the Juvenile Probation Department, the release states.
"CISD anticipates the DA’s office will take additional steps to address the student’s action through the juvenile court system," the release states.
The school district said it will cooperate with local law enforcement.
"Our focus remains on Mrs. Rogers, her family, and our students and staff at Collins,” Stephanie Howell, CISD superintendent, said in the release. “This incident affects our whole district, as well. We want our teachers and staff to feel safe at work, just as we want our students to feel safe in school.”
The district added that it cannot provide any additional details, citing the privacy rights of the victim, the privacy rights of the juvenile, and the ongoing investigation.
