KATY, Texas — A Houston-area 3rd grader is one of a select few who was recently honored and received statewide recognition for math achievement.
9-year-old Haripriya Patel, of Katy, is one of 61 students in Texas to be named a 2024 National Math Star.
At least twice a week, Haripriya can be found at one of her favorite places -- the library. Or, she is usually solving equations behind a computer screen.
"Math is so interesting, and I love solving problems," she said.
The National Math Star program recognizes students who demonstrate extraordinary talent in mathematics, providing them with resources and support to pursue their dreams.
Over the next 10 years, Haripriya will receive $100,000 in free educational resources to help her achieve her goal of becoming a marine biologist.
Her mother, Bhumi Patel, couldn't be prouder.
"I felt proud of her," she said. "Before kindergarten, she would be interested in learning toys more than just regular teddy bears."
Haripriya’s advanced abilities have led her to take math courses four to five years ahead of her age group.
"Math is used everywhere in the world, and to solve your problems, you just break it down step by step, do the steps in order, and you come to your solution," she said.
She hopes her story will add up and inspire others.
"I feel like all kids should have the opportunity to learn more about STEM," she said.
