Meeting to be held Monday night as SAISD faces closures

The current proposal calls for 15 campus closures and three mergers.

SAN ANTONIO — More than a dozen schools may be closing in San Antonio ISD if district leaders choose to vote for its right-sizing plan.

The current proposal calls for 15 campus closures and three mergers.

A final decision will be made during a school board meeting on Monday night when they vote on the proposal.

This is being met with mixed emotions from parents. Several families have begged for more time and options, while others support the district’s rightsizing plan.

On Friday, San Antonio ISD released its final recommendation to parents. 15 schools are now facing a shutdown to cope with declining enrollment and limited resources.

The original draft recommended 19 campus closures, most of which are elementary schools.

This vote will end a months-long process to reduce the number of schools in SAISD, a district will nearly 100 campuses.

It’s been a passionate topic among parents who don’t want their child’s school to close.

In past meetings, some familes have been critical of the district’s plan. The district’s superintendent Jaime Aquino says these recommendations were not made lightly.

However, if approved, he says the plan will result in a major transformation allowing the district to reimagine the way it support students and educators.

That meeting is Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at the district's central administrative office on West Quincy.
