SAN ANTONIO — Nearly 60,000 thousand students and their families are getting ready to start the first day of school in the North East Independent School District.
This year the district has made some changes to have new buildings and ways to stay safe.
NEISD has done a lot of work this summer getting everything ready for the first day of school.
Parents are going to be showing up and dropping off their kids and there's a lot of new things to expect.
First things first is safety. North East ISD is beefing up its police department, adding what they're calling an "Emergency Response Team."
This includes eight former SWAT or military members, who are trained specifically to take down immediate threats to a campus.
The district says they exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement...
The eight members will be working in groups of two and will patrol across the district's 70 campuses.
On top of this new team, the district says they will continue to staff at least one officer at each high school and middle school campus.
Another addition is "Smart Tags." Its an App parents can sign up for so you can know when your student gets on and off the bus.
They've done a pilot program at a few schools but will now across the district.
To sign up you can download smart tag app on your phone.
