City's largest school district heads back to school Monday

Northside ISD is also celebrating 75 years of being open.

SAN ANTONIO — The city’s largest district is heading back to school on Monday. Northside ISD is also celebrating a major milestone, 75 years of being open.

They will start the new year with a new campus for the 2024-25 school year, M’Lissa M. Chumbley Elementary School.

There are 83 elementary campuses in Northside ISD and a total of 132 campuses.

Chumbley is the newest addition to the district. About 500 students will be attending, according to Principal Jeremy Day. But just three days ago they were still finishing the campus.

On Friday, our cameras spotted construction crews wrapping up their work. Day told us they spent the last two weeks getting staff in and the building ready for their first day.

Inside the campus is described as very big and spacious. It’s two stories and will accommodate Pre-K thru grade 5 students.

“The hallways are a good calming tone gray and white there is nothing too bright for the kids to get distracted by and the classrooms are airy," said Jeremy Day. "Every classroom has two nice big windows state of the art electronics and video projectors and screens so the inside is gorgeous so I cant wait for everyone to see it.”

The school’s namesake will be on campus for the first day on Monday. M’Lissa Chumbley is a former and longtime NISD school board trustee. She graduated from John Marshall High School and has a strong background in agriculture.

That's why the school’s mascot, “the Champions,” is a Highland cow.

School begins at 7:40 a.m. on Monday. Parents are allowed to walk their children to class, no matter the grade.

And they hope to continue that throughout the year.
