SAN ANTONIO — The school year is in full swing, and it actually started really early for some area schools last month, as early as Aug. 5.
But how would you feel about school starting after Labor Day?
This is a proposed plan one state representative is trying to make happen.
Jared Patterson in North Texas created this idea because he says it’s too hot for kids to be outside in the middle of August.
Patterson also says the heat is putting a strain on the power grid.
Energy experts say the idea won’t make much of a difference in saving energy because it’s still getting hotter, and more people are moving here.
San Antonio ISD provided a statement saying they’re going to watch how this plays out and will consider how it can impact scheduling and planning.
Edgewood ISD Superintendent Dr. Eduardo Hernandez also provided a statement, saying they don’t like the plan. Hernandez says starting the school year off in August keeps everything on track for state testing, students in extracurriculars and sports and teachers for school training and preparation.
Northside ISD and Northeast ISD declined to comment.
Patterson says the bill is still in the early stages and more research will have to be done on how much power and money the proposition could save.
