New back-to-school shopping trends emerging as customers look for savings

"They are taking advantage of our special prices, and they're buying early." Said Saul Roman, District Manager, Dollar General.

SAN ANTONIO — Parents are feeling the pinch at the register as inflation is once again impacting family budgets, as they prepare for back to school shopping.

According to the National Retail Federation, cost are still 20% higher than they were in 2019. Over at the Dollar General on Old Seguin Road, back to school items are flying off the shelves.

"They're taking advantage of our special prices, and they're buying early." Saul Roman, District Manager, Dollar General, said.

According to a recent back to school survey by the National Retail Federation, 65% said they started shopping earlier to spread their spending through multiple paychecks.

Roman says they are constantly restocking shelves, and enticing customers with deals and additional coupons on their app.

We have $5 off $25, which ends Friday. We also have $2 off of $10.  We have our 30% discount for teachers, that are coming up as well.” Roman said.

Alejandra Alvarado has three kids and shops at Dollar General. She says back to school cost are high, and she likes Dollar General for the coupons.

Another customer, Fran Marin, says he is looking for quality and good prices.

The survey also shows total spending per household is down for the first time since 2018, and families are willing to buy more store brand generic products, and shopping more this year at discount stores.

"We try to provide the one-stop-shop. That's all we need to, and that's what we strive for for our customers, just to make sure they get the more bang for their buck,” Roman said.
