As students head back to school in San Antonio, others may opt for virtual learning

Students who are looking for a non-traditional approach to education have options.

SAN ANTONIO — It's back-to-school time in San Antonio, and while many students will return to class in-person, others will head online.

For some children, that will be Texas Connections Academy @ Houston. The online program operates as an approved Houston Independent School District campus charter school and its accredited through HISD. According to its Executive Director Darla Gardner, 7,300 students are currently enrolled statewide with 450 students in the San Antonio area.

Grades 3 thru 12 are applicable to apply for the online school.

"Even without COVID, we may be a short term solution [for] maybe a student who is having some medical issues or maybe a student who is an actor or an athlete and they need to travel, and they need that flexible environment," said Gardner.

Gardner said students are able to access their coursework online 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

"Some students and families may wake up first thing in the morning and begin their lessons. Another family may not start the day until 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Our students have their lessons on their planners and our teachers are providing live lessons, and those live lessons are recorded for them to watch later."
