SAN ANTONIO — It's time to get rowdy! Monday is the first day of school for students at UTSA. And just days ago, the university's mascot the Roadrunner welcomed freshmen and other students during move in. Now they will head to class for the first time along with the upper classmen.
Freshman Maddie Orona said she just want make friends, and it's likely she’ll have no problem doing so. College officials said approximately 35,000 students will attend UTSA this fall.
Orona is also one of 3,300 students who recently moved into campus housing. There are a total of five UTSA-owned properties on the main campus.. Then there is University Oaks, which is also here on campus but managed by a third party company. An additional 1,300 students moved into that community.
Last week was move in and we had a chance to speak with some of them as they entered the dorms.
Many were excited about school starting but most were looking forward to the memories they hope to experience.
We asked them, "what are you most looking forward to?”
"Making a lot of new friends and exploring the city,” said Orona.
"Personally, I think I'm just looking forward to trying new things as it is my last year and just trying to savor every moment of it that I can because I know I will definitely miss it," said Angelica Cordero, another student.
There are several other exciting things happening at UTSA this year. Possibly the biggest announcement so far is the merger between UTSA and UT Health San Antonio. That won’t be complete until 2025.
Also in the works is another dorm on campus. Blanco Hall is under construction and will open next fall to 600 residential students.
Lastly, there is a new degree program launching this semester focused on digital influencing. Students will learn the skilled needed to find success in the world of social media management, digital marketing and content creation.
