Tax free weekend is upon us

Only certain items are tax free through Sunday, including school supplies.

SAN ANTONIO — The annual back-to-school tax free weekend is now underway and it runs through Sunday night.

If you haven't finished your back-to-school shopping, this is the weekend to do it and avoid paying what for many, is a taxing tax.

"For me today, I'm just making sure I got stuff that's organized so that the kids have easy access to all the supplies," said Bridget Morris teaches the 6th grade at Garcia Middle School.

She says she is always looking out for the kids when it comes to supplies.

"I just want to make sure everybody has access to everything they need. So I have extra supplies, and then I have the storage stuff to be able to put it in so that the kids can easily go and get it without having to ask," said Morris.

Joseph Lowry, a Walmart Communications Manager told us, "We have our entire seasonal section set up for Back to school. It's organized according to the things you need. And if you want to know what the specifics that you need are, you can use the Walmart app and check your school supply list."

Qualifying tax free weekend items include clothing, footwear, school supplies, facemasks, and backpacks. Special purchases that do qualify for the tax free weekend are school supplies using a business account, but you must have an exemption certificate to do so. Layaways, special orders, and rain checks.

Morris says tax free weekend is definitely worth it for her.

"That's why I like to wait until this time to come and buy them, because then you can get a bigger supply for a smaller amount," Morris said.
