SAN ANTONIO — Officials say a student was accused of making a terroristic threat against a local high school.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office says the threat was allegedly linked to a post online showcasing several weapons and a threat to shoot up the campus at East Central High School in east Bexar County.
Earlier this week, students reported the Instagram post to school administration. They got district police involved, who requested BCSO deputies help with the investigation. Investigators did link it to a high school student who they believed was behind the post.
East Central ISD said in a statement that deputies and ECPD searched the student's home and did not find any weapons. The district says the photo used in the Instagram post was sourced from a Google search. The student was detained Tuesday night and will "face significant legal and disciplinary action."
The school district said it added extra officers on campus Wednesday to ensure a safe environment.
"Whether threats are intended as a 'joke,' or not, all threats will be taken seriously. We want to remind our students and families that, once a source is identified, we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law," ECISD said in a letter to families.
This investigation comes more than a year after a reported shooting on campus turned out to be a hoax. Officers swarmed the school as frightened parents waited outside before they realized the campus was targeted by a fake 911 call. Initially believed to be a student, it was later determined the call came from outside the country.
