SAN ANTONIO — A fashion for the heart. On Saturday, the University of the Incarnate Word will have its "Red Dress Fashion Show." It showcases student designers and highlights the importance of women's heart health.
Two UIW students Kara De Leon and Kyianna Forge have created designs for the show.
"I was like oh my gosh, I did this," De Leon said. "I made it with my own two hands." I wanted to convey the strength behind women. But, also the fierceness of them."
Since the summer, De Leon has been working on the creation. Meanwhile, Forge said she started her design not long ago.
"It is kind of like a time capsule is how I describe it," Forge said. "I feel like a lot of my personality is in this design."
UIW has had the fashion show since 2006. The students have free range, and students from 13 different high schools get to participate.
Professor Melinda Adams said the event also raises awareness about heart health in women. Adams is also the director of the fashion management program.
"One, to make women aware and also women need to stop and take care of themselves for a second," she said. "We are usually the ones that we take care of everybody else. So, we put ourselves last. This is a time to enjoy the fashions, but to also take a pause and stop and think about what have we done for ourselves lately."
The event is happening Saturday and will feature 75-to-80 garments. The high school and college students participating could even receive a scholarship.
"I can't wait to see everyone's designs," De Leon said.
