ELMENDORF, Texas — The town of Elmendorf could be getting a lot bigger with the addition of "The Ranch at Elmendorf." D.R. Horton, one of the nation's largest homebuilding companies, plans to develop a subdivision.
"The San Antonio market is growing and just as other large markets experience, the many local towns surrounding the city are expected to benefit from the economic impact," DR Horton's spokesperson said in a statement. "D.R. Horton is looking forward to working with the community of Elmendorf to foster this expansion with our new project, which includes plans for a new elementary school inside of a master-planned community and multiple product offerings to meet the needs of current and new residents."
City administrator Cody Dailey says that growth would help to grow a tax base that could help the city as a whole.
"We can do some infrastructure improvements throughout the remaining parts of town that we simply haven’t had the money to do in the past," Dailey said.
Dailey says it could also create a bigger customer base that could lead to more retail options, especially a grocer or pharmacist so residents could get basic goods and prescriptions.
"Perhaps our citizens won’t have to drive all the way to Floresville or Brooks City Base for their basic needs," Dailey said.
While growth will mean a lot of changes, Dailey says they want to hold onto what makes it special.
"It’s the people. It’s the people that make Elmendorf special," Dailey said.
