Colder weather brings dry air and dry skin. Here's how to protect yourself.

Dermatologists recommend creams over lotions, and say chapped skin can lead to a skin infection.

SAN ANTONIO — During the fall and winter, cold fronts are more frequent giving us a break from the heat!

While cold fronts bring a drop in temperature, it also drives in extremely dry air.

This kind of weather pattern has a huge impact on our body and skin. As humidity drops, it almost dehydrates us.

With less moisture in the atmosphere, our bodies react resulting in chapped lips, rough and itchy skin.

Dr. Annabelle Garcia, a dermatologist and Owner of Sonterra Dermatology explains the farther we go into winter, the drier air will more likely result in irritated skin.

How do we determine if it's the weather or if it's a deeper issue?

Dr. Garcia explains once your skin becomes constantly red and is painful or tender, that can be a sign of skin infection.

At that point, you'll want to consult with a dermatologist.

Dr. Garcia recommends creams over lotion especially during the Winter.

Creams help hydrate your skin at a deeper level. This will help lock moisture into your skin.

She also mentioned a new product she's excited to market called "internal hydration," which she said helps improve the texture and radiance of skin by drawing water in.
