Bexar Co. sheriff's deputy dies from coronavirus complications, medical examiner's office says

Sheriff Salazar held a news videoconference with reporters on Thursday afternoon to discuss the deputy's death and procedures at the Bexar County Jail.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that a 53-year-old detention deputy died Thursday due to medical complications.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said Deputy Timothy De La Fuente died of complications from coronavirus. The sheriff's office said an autopsy is pending.

Salazar held a news video conference with reporters on Thursday afternoon to discuss the deputy's death.

A temporary memorial has been set up at the Bexar County Detention C... enter (200 N. Comal St. South Tower) for Deputy Timothy De La Fuente who died yesterday after serving 27 years with the Sheriff's Office. Those wishing to honor Deputy De La Fuente can visit the site to leave flowers or other notes of thanks and remembrance.

De La Fuente was a 27-year veteran of the force. He was found dead in the North Patrol Service area on Thursday morning.

Around 8 a.m., BCSO received a deceased person call. The person was confirmed to be a detention deputy.

BCSO and Metro Health are investigating any contact he may have had with the public and other members of the department.

Sheriff Salazar also said in the news conference that 104 jail inmates have tested positive for coronavirus. The department previously reported 41 deputies also have tested positive.
