Healthy SA: Creating Key Clubs to improve mental health for kids and help the community

The clubs are located all across Texas, and it is easy to start one of your own.

SAN ANTONIO — Even though we are now out of the coronavirus pandemic some teens are still struggling to connect with their peers.  in today's Healthy SA, many schools are turning to service clubs to help meet that need.

Joining a club is a great way for a student to gain self-esteem, make new friends, and help the community through projects. That's what one organization is aiming to do all at once across the globe.

Michelle Study-Campbell, Executive Director of Kiwanis Youth Programs told us, "We have a lot of great statistics on how our students really feel connected and part of something bigger than themselves when they're in Key Club."

Once they begin engaging in community service the students' passion is ignited and they become advocates for themselves. Study-Campbell added, "And suddenly they're really growing in their leadership skills. And, they find that self-confidence boost that self-esteem."

Key Club International consists of about 5000 clubs around the globe. That includes 225,000 students. 15,000 of those students hail from Texas. Each week they come together to build connections, plan community service initiatives, and learn leadership skills.

There's even a concept known as a helper's high which helps lessen the feelings of isolation, loneliness, despair, and desperation. Study-Campbell said, "By volunteering. It's a scientific fact that when you volunteer you have positive brain chemicals and endorphins are released that make you feel happy, make you feel good, and suddenly, again, service bigger than yourself."
