SAN ANTONIO — Washing machines are not the quietest appliances, but Sue Ann Brooks' machine is so loud you can't stay in the same room with it. What makes that even worse is that it's less than a year old.
"I bought a Maytag because they're supposed to be good" Brooks says. She paid close to $800 for the machine last May. By July, a repairman had to come out because the machine was making a loud squealing noise.
Brooks says the repairman replaced a belt and the noise went away. Then about three loads later, there was a new noise. She called the repairman back and he came out and replaced the transmission. A short time later, the noise came back... this time much louder.
So far, Brooks says she has been through two repair companies and seven site visits trying to make the noise go away. "I'm done," says Brooks. "I want them to give me a new machine!"
Each time the repairman has come out, Maytag has taken care of the bill, but Brooks says enough is enough, she thinks Maytag should do the right thing and replace her lemon machine. When she couldn't make that happen, she called KENS.
I sent an email to the public relations person at Maytag and followed up with a phone call. That was about 11:30 in the morning. They promptly responded, saying they would investigate and let me know.
Around 2:30 that afternoon, Brooks received a phone call, then an email around 4:30 confirming her new washing machine would be delivered within a couple of weeks.
