SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Education Agency has recommended disbanding the remaining members of Edgewood Independent School District's board of trustees and appointing a conservator to oversee the troubled district, according to a letter sent to district administration and trustees late last week.
The findings were summarized in an eight-page preliminary Special Accreditation Investigation report obtained by the I-Team Wednesday.
An Edgewood ISD spokeswoman Wednesday afternoon confirmed the state's completion of its preliminary report, but declined to discuss details.
The state has also recommended lowering the district's accreditation status.
The state's investigation, launched Jan. 14, found a "systemic breakdown of the EISD Board of Trustees' ability to govern," since the district has been unable to fill its vacant superintendent's position or replace two high school principals.
The state also determined trustees failed to collaborate with district administration and acted individually on behalf of the board, violations of the state's education code.
Edgewood ISD has until Feb. 29 to respond.
The letter comes less than a week after three Edgewood ISD trustees resigned, leaving just three members on the current board.
