SAN ANTONIO — It has been a year since a teenager was gunned down on the west side and San Antonio police have yet to arrest the shooter.
Sunday, family and friends gathered at the scene of the crime off South Chupaderas Street and Cesar Chavez to remember and honor Humberto Kalias Perales.
“Coming out here, being able to bring balloons and candles, and put pictures of him, it brings us closer to him spiritually,” One family member said.
Police said the 16-year-old Lanier High School student was walking with a friend around 10:30 that night when a vehicle pulled up next to them and someone inside fired several shots.
Perales was hit and taken to the hospital where he died. His friend was also hurt but survived. Investigators said the shooter sped off in the vehicle.
“Being here right now, it really hits us that it’s been a year,” a family member said.
The family is hoping someone comes forward with information that could lead to an arrest.
“It angers me the most because he wasn’t in accident, he didn’t pass from sickness, he was murdered,” One family member said. "He didn't deserve this."
While it has been a tough year without their loved one, they say they can still feel his presence around them.
“I wish there was like a phone that I could talk to him in heaven,” a friend said.
