10-year-old injured after being hit by a car on the way to school. The driver didn't stop to help.

The boy, who was riding his bicycle, says he got pinned under the car.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas — A 10-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a car on the way to school.

Officials said the driver took off.

This happened Thursday in front of Ricardo Salinas Elementary School in Universal City, northeast of San Antonio.

The boy's mother is sharing his story exclusively with KENS 5 in hopes other witnesses may come forward to help find the person responsible.

All officials know right now is the driver is a woman driving a white SUV who dropped kids off at the same school.

Witnesses were able to get part of the license plate and handed it over to police.

The boy's mother believes her children and others will not be safe until the driver is found.

Every morning, her two sons ride their bikes to school. One always has a cell phone in their pocket with their parents on the line.

"They're in communication with me and their dad up until the time they reach the school doors and we know they're safe," she explained.

The mother, who asked for her family to remain anonymous, said Thursday morning she heard her younger son start to panic on the phone.

"Once he calmed down he said, '[He's] is carrying his bike!' He was just terrified. That's all he could say. I'm like, 'What do you mean [your brother is] carrying his bike?'"

Moments later, her older son picked up the phone.

"He's like, 'Mom, I was hit. My bike was hit, I was hit'. My heart just sank," she said. "I got to ask him, 'Why are you carrying your bike?' He's like, 'Because it won't go anymore. It was trapped under her car and it won't go anywhere.'"

The 10-year-old says he got pinned under the car, which caused his bicycle to break.

This happened at a crosswalk on Old Cimarron Trail as cars exit the elementary school.

"As a responsible adult, her first instinct should have been to wait and let him go. I'm shaking right now," said the mother. "According to [my son], she rolled down the window and asked, 'Are you okay?' And before he could answer, he said that she sped off."

Other parents stopped to help the boy and took him to the nurse.

His mother got him checked out at a hospital where doctors found internal bruising around his ribs.

The 10-year-old was taken to the hospital, where doctors found internal bruising around his ribs.

"If she's willing to flee, not to take any personal responsibility for injuring a child, how can we feel safe that it won't happen again to any of our children?" the mother added.

Friday afternoon, Judson ISD told KENS 5, "Judson ISD PD and Universal City PD arrived at the campus to assist. A partial license plate number was provided by a witness and the vehicle was reported as being a white SUV. Law enforcement has been actively involved in the situation and have been present on and around the campus to identify the vehicle."

As KENS 5 filmed exterior video of Salinas Elementary Friday evening, a woman who says she works at the school told us the driver was found.

To confirm independently, we called Universal City Police, Judson ISD Police and a communications representative for the district.

Universal City Police Chief, Johnny Siemens, says his department didn't get a call about the driver.

Judson ISD and their police department could not be reached after hours. We were told to call again Monday.
