CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Salma Aktar, the mother of an 11-month-old boy who died Saturday, is awake and talking with family, according to an update from DPS on Wednesday.
The 11-month-old baby was involved in a car accident in San Patricio County with his mother and father in late May.
A representative of the UT Health San Antonio system provided 3NEWS with a link to the couple's GoFundMe page, which says they are Postdoctoral Research Fellows at UT Health San Antonio.
San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera told 3NEWS the infant did not have brain activity May 30, and Texas Department of Public Safety Public Information Sgt. Harold "Rob" Mallory said the baby died Saturday.
He was two weeks shy of his first birthday.
Mallory said Tuesday that Aktar was in critical condition at University Hospital in San Antonio after undergoing a number of surgeries.
The family was injured after being hit by an F-150 on May 27 after trying to get onto an US 77 South entrance ramp from State Highway 89 outside of Sinton.
The accident led to TxDOT and San Patricio County officials installing a flashing "Stop" sign at the intersection.
