BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — An inmate at the Bexar County jail died after a sheriff's deputy found him "unresponsive in a booking cell" at the facility Tuesday night, officials said, marking the 13th death at the jail so far this year.
Around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 46-year-old Marcus Joseph Fontenette was found unresponsive in the South Tower area of the jail, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said in a release. He was booked earlier in the day.
Officials say the deputy was approached by medical staff after Fontenette "refused treatment." When the deputy arrived at the cell, Fontenette was found unresponsive and life-saving measures were initiated until additional medical staff arrived.
First responders with the San Antonio Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced Fontenette dead at 12:01 a.m. BCSO said it appears he suffered some kind of medical episode leading to his death, but the county medical examiner still has to determine an official cause of death.
