DALLAS — Perspective shapes reality.
“I can turn around and look at that screen and see that’s my face,” said Sha’Carri Richardson, 2023 World Champion.
Reality shapes the future.
“We cannot stop at World Champion, but it’s a nice beginning,” said Richardson.
It is a beginning that Richardson never forgets.
“This moment is one of those full circle moments,” said Richardson.
As a David W. Carter High School track & field athlete, Richardson ran at John Kincaide Stadium. She is now the fourth fastest American woman and the sixth fastest woman of all time in the world.
In October, Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to rename the stadium’s track the Sha’Carri Richardson Track.
“I am so honored and speechless. I’m going to try not to cry, but I will say I’ll continue to be great. I understand and receive the love and the influence that I have when it comes to being from Dallas,” said Richardson.
It is an influence that current Carter athletes already follow such as senior, Kennedy Dehorney, who will be joining the track team at the University of Memphis.
“Track isn’t really a big sport in Texas. Football usually takes over, but she still gave us a name as a track team,” said Dehorney.
Dallas ISD has invited every school that Richardson attended and their track teams to the naming dedication ceremony.
“I go to Carter. I went to Atwell. It’s like I’m at home and I’m supposed to be here because she’s my teammate really,” said Tonnie Nelson, a Carter High School track & field athlete.
With the home team backing Richardson, she is looking forward to achieving new heights.
“I’m not back y’all,” said Richardson. “I’m better.”
