24 pit bulls rescued from suspected dog fighting ring in Bexar County

Animal Care Services rescued 24 pit bulls from a property in southern Bexar County that they suspect were part of a dog fighting ring. The dogs were underweight, authorities said, and had injuries consistent with fighting.

SAN ANTONIO -- Animal Care Services rescued 24 pit bulls from a property in southern Bexar County that they suspect were part of a dog fighting ring.

The dogs were underweight, authorities said, and had injuries consistent with fighting. They were tied to trees or to stakes in the ground when they were found on Wednesday afternoon.

Vincent Medley, ACSassistant director, said the parks department reported the concern after seeing the dogs tied up in the heat without food.

The dogs were being kept on city property in the 3600 block of Fest Road near Highway 16.

ACS agents said The dogs will be examined and held in a secure area until a hearing in set in the next 10 days. A judge will then determine what will happen to the animals.

Two kittens were also seized from the property.

Investigators had rescued 36 dogs from the same area last year. A man is facing two counts of animal cruelty in that case,
