Deputies found him unresponsive in his cell around 7 p.m. Thursday night.

SAN ANTONIO — A 52-year-old inmate died while in custody at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies found him unresponsive in his cell around 7 p.m. Thursday night.

BCSO said the inmate, identified as Jaime Rodriguez Valdez, had received medication for pre-existing conditions just before 5 p.m. He was booked on a theft charge and was waiting for his housing assignment when he suffered a medical episode two hours later, BCSO said.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
