70 truckloads of dirt arriving at Frost Bank Center for the rodeo

That’s about 2,000 tons of dirt, which is all needed to fill the Frost Bank Center.

SAN ANTONIO — We are just days away from the start of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The doors open to the public this Thursday at the Frost Bank Center for its 75th year.

It takes tons of effort to transform the arena before the first day and it all begins with dirt.

Our sources say it will take 70 truckloads of soil to fill the arena, and it's arriving Monday.

That’s about 2,000 tons of dirt, which is all needed to fill the Frost Bank Center.

This is not just any dirt, it’s special dirt. Organizers say it’s made up of a unique blend to maximize the performance of rodeo athletes.

We are talking your horse riders, bull riders, and mutton busting kids, just to to name a few.

While it is clean dirt, it’s not new dirt.

The rodeo reuses the same dirt they purchased from Charlotte, Texas in 1988.

That’s a savings of $25,000 dollars each year on soil that they carefully take care of and sift thru each year.

Volunteers are in for a long day.

It takes about seven hours to load the dirt into the arena.

But when all is said and done, the Frost Bank Center will be ready for the 17-day event.
