A Christmas Carol to be retold on stage with hard of hearing actors

The playhouse will stage an adaption of Charles Dickens' classic novel that showcases both hearing and hard-of-hearing actors in the production.

SAN ANTONIO — The Public Theater of San Antonio is putting on an inclusive version of A Christmas Carol this holiday season.

The playhouse will stage an adaption of Charles Dickens' classic novel that showcases both hearing and hard-of-hearing actors in the production. The dialogue will include spoken word and American Sign Language.

The new production is directed by  J. Robert “Jimmy” Moore and Robert Cardoza, Jr. and reimagines the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge with a fresh perspective. The actors who will play Tiny Tim, Marley and Mrs. Fred are hard of hearing.

"This is a way for our Deaf community to be represented on stage, where very few opportunities would be given elsewhere. Including Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing actors and shadow interpreters in the production has been challenging, but extremely rewarding. The rest of the cast has been welcoming and willing to learn ASL to be able to pull off these magical moments in the show, Director Robert Cardoza, Jr., said.

The theater is collaborating with Stage Hands, a company that specializes in ASL interpretation for the performing arts.

The shows take place over the next three weekends, including Thursday performances. The dates include Dec. 1-3, 7-10 and 14-17. Click here for tickets.
