'We decided it was time' | Local Cajun cuisine staple to close its doors after nearly 40 years in business

Acadiana Cafe, which has been serving Cajun and Southern style cooking since 1986, said in a press release it will operate through Thursday, August 29.

SAN ANTONIO — A staple restaurant in San Antonio that had been around for decades announced it will close its doors at the end of August.

Acadiana Cafe, which has been serving Cajun and Southern style cooking since 1986, said in a press release it will operate through Thursday, August 29.

The release said the building and property was being sold to the Hacienda Vallarta Restaurant group and will become a Mexican buffet.

"The Acadiana Café building and property is being sold to the Hacienda Vallarta Restaurant Group. While their concept will be Mexican Buffet style service, they will have access to all the Acadiana Café recipes…… award winning catfish, chicken and dumplings, Cajun cabbage, red beans n rice, etc." the post read.

KENS 5 spoke to customers paying their last visits and getting one last bite of the tasty Cajun cuisine.

"There is no catfish compatible to this," one patron said.

The restaurant's owner, Dave Saylor, is reflecting on the fond memories at the eatery and says the tough decision to call it quits was one he had to marinate on.

"We decided it was time. I am getting older. All my key people are getting older," Saylor said.

He's especially grateful for his loyal customers who he says have had children grow up coming to the restaurant. "Folks thank you for all your years of patronage. Thank you for all the well wishing, all the positive heart-felt comments," he said. "Thank ya'll! Thank you!"

Saylor says customers should stay tuned for a farewell party.

Meanwhile the restaurant's new owners told KENS 5 they plan to remodel the inside prior to its opening as a new Mexican Buffet. They don't have an opening date yet but say they are looking toward the end of the year or early next year.
