SAN ANTONIO -- Military officials have identified the two airmen who were killed Friday morning in what has been designated as a "workplace violence incident" at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
The shooting was believed to be a murder-suicide. It occurred on base at the Medina Annex in the office of the 342nd Training Squadron Headquarters in building 147.
First responders arrived at the scene of the shooting at about 8:50 a.m. and found two men dead from gunshot wounds.
They have been identified as Air Force Lt. Col. William A. Schroeder, 37th Training Wing, 342nd Training Squadron Commander, and Air Force Tech Sgt. Steven D. Bellino, 342nd Training Squadron student. Air Force officials have notified their next of kin.
“The 37th Training Wing mourns the loss of our Airmen and family members,” said Brig. Gen. Trent H. Edwards, the commander of the 37th Training Wing, where both members were assigned. “Our primary focus at this time is to take care of the family and the men and women who are grieving our losses.”
“A tragedy of this type is felt by each and every member, but we will pull together to help our own," said Brig. Gen. Robert LaBrutta, the commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio. "The 502d Air Base Wing and all of Joint Base San Antonio convey our thoughts and prayers to the families who were impacted by this tragedy and our entire focus is to ensure they have the support they need to persevere during this very difficult time."
Air Force officials are still investigating the incident, which caused a lockdown of JBSA-Lackland and nearby schools Friday morning.
