Alamo holds special celebration for David Crockett's birthday

Crockett is a key figure in Texas' fight for independence from Mexico

SAN ANTONIO — Today the Alamo is doing a birthday celebration for David Crockett.

He's a key figure in Texas' fight against Mexico to be a Republic and U.S. State.

"He was a magnet. People came to him for hope, inspiration and his tall tales," said Gary Foreman, David Crockett Historian.

Crockett was born in Tennessee and served three terms in congress.

After losing an election, Crockett came to Texas in 1836 for a fresh start.

"He had an indominable spirit. He went through some phenomenal hardships and rose through them all," said Foreman.

Crockett's descendants like Errol Flannery drove hours for Saturdays' celebration.

Flannery says he's proud to carry the family name.

"I'm very proud of that and proud to be a Texan. I'm proud to be a seventh generation Texan because of the sacrifice he made at the Alamo. Even though they lost the battle, they won the war," said Flannery.

Remember the Alamo is a saying known around the world.

It even brings visitors like Alex Frew visiting from Scotland to appreciate the Alamo's impact.

"It's more about the defenders and how they fought for what they believed in and it just kind of resonated with us, so it's always been our thing to come here to the Alamo," said Frew.

This year, Crockett would be turning 238 years old.
