An inside look at how Fiesta medals are made

Fiesta is right around the corner and some have already started scouring the city for their favorite medals.

Fiesta is right around the corner and some have already started scouring the city for their favorite medals.

Have you ever wondered where they come from?

Many of your favorite Fiesta medals get their start at Lonestar Special Tee's.

“I thought it was just collectibles," artist Mando Morfin said.

This is Morfin's first year designing medals. With about 20 under his belt so far, he's learning fast.

“The meaning behind them, they add certain elements that represents them," Morfin added.

Once his design is done, the medals are manufactured and hand painted in China. After a month or so the medals get shipped to San Antonio. Mondo's experience opening that first package was special.

“It’s a long process from starting the design for approval and then sending it out and having them produce the medal,” Morfin noted. “So when you finally see the medal product, it feels pretty good."

But when it comes to Fiesta, GM Elaine Blain will tell you it's about more than just medals.

“We are the exclusive merchandiser, so we are the only ones who can produce official products like caps, apparel and anything else with the registration mark on it,” Blain said.

This is the busiest time of year for her team. After 25 years in business, including 17 as Fiesta's exclusive merchandiser, Blain says the work is well worth it.

“We feel like this is a family for us,” Blain noted. “25 years into it is pretty phenomenal."

The Fiesta store is the last stop for much of the gear they make. After that, it's on to the streets of San Antonio, ready to be shown off in the city's biggest party.
