Anne Hathaway to star as lead in film adaption of East Texas native's novel

Author Colleen Hoover was born in Sulphur Springs and grew up in the community of Saltillo in Hopkins County.

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas — Another book written by an East Texas native is headed to the big screen as a major motion picture.

"Verity," which is authored by Colleen Hoover, is set to become a film starring Oscar winner Anne Hathaway. It will be produced by Amazon MGM and directed by Michael Showalter. The movie will first be released in theaters. The release date is unknown.

Hoover was born in Sulphur Springs and grew up in the community of Saltillo in Hopkins County. In an Instagram post, Hoover said in part, "Verity is coming to theaters and I am so excited for this cast and the script and the director and the whole team bringing this to life. Cannot wait. More coming soon!"

Hathaway will portray the main character and namesake of the book, Verity Crawford. The novel was released 2018 and spent several months on the New York Times best-sellers list. It also sold more than 1 million copies last year alone, according to a report from Variety.

Hathaway, Hoover and Showalter will all be producers for the film, the Variety report said.

According to the summary of the book, Verity Crawford's husband, Jeremy, hires struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh to complete Verity's remaining books in a successful series that she can no longer finish after a car crash left her seriously injured.

But after accepting the position, Lowen finds an unfinished autobiography filled with family secrets and her past that Verity never wanted anyone to read. Lowen decides to keep this information a secret, but as her feelings grow for Jeremy, she considers letting him know what Verity has written.

Variety reported that the roles of Jeremy and Lowen have not been cast yet.

This past summer, Hoover's 2016 novel "It Ends With Us" became a movie as well that starred Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in the lead roles. Variety said that the film brought in $349 million globally. "It Ends With Us" will be coming to Netflix on Dec. 9.

The website also reported Universal Pictures is working on a film version of Hoover’s book “Reminders of Him."
