Several displaced after SAFD extinguishes north-side apartment fire

Authorities responded to the 5300 block of Randolph Boulevard around 4:40 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO — Fire engines and other first responders could be seen at a north-side apartment complex where crews reportedly extinguished flames Tuesday evening.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) was called out to the 5300 block of Randolph, near Crestway and Interstate 35, around 4:40 p.m. According to Battalion Chief Michael Garcia says, the fire appears to have started from a stove in one of the apartment buildings containing 16 units.

"We had crews on the bottom floor and crews on the top floor," he said. "They were able to control it, confine the fire damage to those two apartments below and directly above. But the remainder of the building did take quite a bit of smoke damage."

He says due to the extensive damage to the electrical system, the fire department had CPS Energy shut off power to the building. For Tuesday night, the building will not be usable, and Red Cross is working to find shelter for two affected residents. Several others were also displaced.
