Arson investigating fire at northwest side neighborhood that destroyed five resident vehicles

Four cars in one driveway, and a truck on the driveway next door were all destroyed in the fire.

SAN ANTONIO — Arson is investigating after five vehicles were burned northwest of downtown early Monday morning.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the 2400 block of Greencrest Drive in between Vance Jackson Road and West Avenue around 2 a.m. for reports of a fire.

When first responders arrived, five vehicles were burning. Police had responded to the same home earlier for reports of a disturbance.

Two families woke up in disbelief after finding their cars scorched in their driveways. What’s worse is that they don’t how this could have happened.

One of the homeowners impacted was Ana Hernandez.

“A tragedy happened, not sure what happened, when we came and woke up, the truck was already on fire and burned," Hernandez said. "And this truck started the other truck, and then we lost all four cars.”

Neighbor Ismael Ponce’s truck was damaged.

"In reality we don’t know we just heard noises," Ponce said. "When my daughter came out everything was in flames. I don’t know, I really don’t know what happened. In reality somebody could’ve passed by, and threw something. But I really don’t know.”

Hernandez’s family does not have surveillance footage. Ponce says he does but nothing was captured. Fortunately, he says his neighbor’s camera did.

“The ones that capture stuff here, they just saw a car pass by... but they don’t know it’s under investigation we’re going to see what happens, but nobody saw anything,” Ponce said.

SAPD and SAFD responded to the early morning call. No estimate on the damages caused by the fire.

This is a developing story.
