SAN ANTONIO — The heavy rains late Sunday and early Monday are creating high water dangers in the San Antonio area.
San Antonio firefighters had said they were looking for a group of people swept away by the rain around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Rescue efforts began just after midnight beneath I-10 at El Monte Boulevard just north of downtown.
The batallion chief says crews made multiple locations responding to this rescue. However, it started in a drainage tunnel on El Monte.
That’s where crews tell us a group of five to six homeless people were camping out. Then just after midnight, they were reportedly swept away by fast-moving water.
When firefighters made the scene, they used rope to tie themselves off and go into the tunnel, which stretches down I-10 and out to the Woodlawn Lake area.
Crews apparently yelled for the group but at last check, they were not able to locate them.
The batallion chief says they even used a boat in their search.
As of 8:40 a.m., officials say there are no longer any active searches.
This is a developing story.
