Family members and friends of a missing man with medical issues are blanketing Military Drive on the south side with flyers and talking to anyone who will pause long enough to hear their plea.
Austin Bracero was last seen off Southeast Military not far from Interstate 37 Sunday evening.
Kandee Bracero said she and her son had been running an errand and were eastbound on Southeast Military when Austin became upset and vanished at a crowded intersection.
“He was saying 'Let me out of the car!' I said no but when I stopped at this light he jumped out," Bracero said, adding that she made a quick turnaround and searched for almost two hours, but she couldn’t find her son.
Bracero is described as 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He also has a tattoo of '210' on his right shoulder.
John Tucker is the missing man’s cousin and he has been helping with the effort to bring Austin home safely.
Tucker said “He smokes. He's got a fixation with cigarettes. He's going to ask people for cigarettes and he's going to be looking for cigarettes.”
Tucker said people should also be on the lookout for his bright red sneakers.
Describing his cousin as a non-violent person who is easily confused, Tucker said “He's lost and we want him home. He needs to come home.”
Bracero was last seen wearing a black t-shirt with Super Mario, blue jeans, red Adidas, a small white backpack, and yellow and black headphones.
His mother said in the most recent photograph they have of him, he has a small beard, but recently he has been clean-shaven.
Bracero is also diagnosed with a medical condition and has been without important medication. His mother said when he ran away he had no wallet, no ID, no money and no phone. She added that he doesn’t even have the ability to remember her phone number but he does know her name.
Bracero said they have talked to dozens of people and several workers up and down Military have reported seeing Austin, but the last report of him being in the area was Monday. Bracero said the manager at one store confirmed they saw him make a small purchase and a family friend sent a message saying Austin had been seen at a grocery store as well, but when he showed up at a small convenience store, Bracero said “They showed (the worker) the flyer and the girl there said she saw him there but they ran him off.”
Bracero said it was warm when Austin disappeared and he was only wearing a t-shirt. With the passing of the cold front with high winds, she’s worried he is in dire condition.
“I just want him to be safe. It's cold out here and he don't have no jacket and I just want him home,” Bracero said.
