KERRVILLE -- Kerr County Animal Control is searching for two unidentified boys who could be carrying rabies. The two reportedly found a sick bat underneath the Sidney Baker Street Bridge on Saturday, then brought it to the Pet Supplies Plus store nearby wrapped in a pair of jeans.
The store called animal control, which tested the bat and found it was positive for rabies.
The manager of the store says she advised the kids to wash their hands but didn't get their names, unaware that the bat was contaminated.
She says they were between the ages of 10 and 12, about 4.5 feet tall, and Hispanic.
"I asked them, I said y'all didn't touch it did you? They said no, we carried it in our blue jeans," said Susan Jones, the Manager of the store.
Kerr County Animal Control launched an investigation to find the identities of the boys due to the fact that rabies is extremely deadly if not treated immediately.
"This is one of the most important cases we have right now. All rabies cases are important, but this is paramount because of the public health and safety," said Ray Garcia, the Director of county animal services.
This is one of 15 confirmed cases of rabies in the county so far this year. The most severe of which was a pet dog that ended up having to be quarantined. Ten people and pets had to get shots because of contact with that one animal.
Garcia says it's highly unlikely the boys contracted rabies, but they have to treat the case as if they did.
Anyone with information is asked to call them immediately at 830-257-3100.
