Baby doll therapy introduced to seniors in Cibolo

Sweet lullabies and kind words fill the halls of The Brooks of Cibolo – using baby dolls as therapy for seniors.

SAN ANTONIO — A new initiative inside The Brooks of Cibolo, a local senior living facility is enriching the lives of its residents - recently introducing mobile nursery doll therapy in its latest heartwarming initiative.

Seniors interacting with these realistic baby dolls remind them of what it was like to hold a baby of their own.

Mari Turner is the executive director for Remarkable Hospice in San Antonio.

“It’s really nice to be able to use a non-medicated approach with patients," Turner said.

Seeing the faces of seniors light up when they hold, touch and rock the baby dolls makes Jessica Sauceda, community liaison for Remarkable Hospice fill up with joy.

“It’s amazing what this program does for patients with memory loss,” Sauceda said.

Sauceda and Turner say the interactions seniors have with the dolls reduce anxiety. Elizabeth Cellars is a resident of The Brooks of Cibolo.

“It’s the best baby I’ve ever held, it’s not crying, or pitching a fit,” Cellars said. “So that’s a pretty good baby, isn’t it? Beautiful, check out the lips, and the hair.”

Kim Cleveland is the memory care coordinator for The Brooks of Cibolo.

“People that are suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia are people," Cleveland said. "They have purpose, they have lives."

This is just an example of how big things come in small packages.
