BCSO: Man charged with animal cruelty after 26 dogs rescued from his northwest-side home

Officials said deputies were able to successfully rescue 26 dogs but one dog was found dead in the kitchen.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County's Sheriff's Office rescued over 20 dogs from a home on the northwest side of San Antonio Thursday, officials said.

According to a Facebook post by BCSO, their Animal Cruelty Unit was alerted to a case on the 7800 block of Fossil Banks after nearby residents saw rats around a house and noticed dogs outside were not being properly cared for.

When deputies arrived they met the homeowner, Michael Moore, who allowed deputies to enter his home.

Authorities said upon entry of the home deputies noticed a strong odor of urine and feces.

According to the Facebook post, deputies spoke with Moore and noticed deplorable living conditions of the home. Deputies also noticed multiple dogs and the entire living room covered in what appeared to be a layer of animal feces.

Animal Control said the situation was "one of the most severe animal cruelty cases they had ever encountered," according to the Facebook post.

Officials said deputies were able to successfully rescue 26 dogs but one dog was found dead in the kitchen.

The dogs were taken to a local veterinarian who confirmed the dogs suffered from poor body weight, visible spines and ribs, urine stains on their fur, and feces encrusted in their paws and nails.

Moore was arrested for animal cruelty. BCSO said additional charges are expected after the dogs' medical examinations.

BCSO said Bexar County Animal Control, the City of San Antonio Animal Control and Bexar County Fire Hazmat assisted with this case.
