SAN ANTONIO — Cherished eatery Cafe Chris has closed its doors, after a fire ripped through the popular Pleasanton spot on Monday.
The restaurant has been in business for more than 30 years. The owners, Mary Rodriguez and her granddaughter Erica Lopez, are still in shock.
"It is just home," Rodriguez said. "It has been overwhelming, and I am just heartbroken."
Several fire crews responded to the restaurant that caught on fire Monday night. The family witnessed all their hard work burn.
"I could see the smoke," Rodriguez said. "I was just thinking, it can't be that bad." She adds that first responders, many of whom are regulars at the eatery, were on the scene comforting the family.
Wednesday was the first day Rodriguez went back to see the devastation.
"You never think this is going to happen to you," she said.
Even amidst this trying time, the family is still giving back to their hometown of Pleasanton.
They donated food that was salvageable to other businesses and the organization Safer Path Family Violence Shelter. The organization praised the eatery on social media.
"We can't use it," Lopez said. "So, why waste it."
It is easy to see the generosity and hearts of others in the small town of Pleasanton. Several businesses in the area are even holding fundraisers and benefits for Cafe Chris.
"We will open up," Rodriguez said. "I am a Rodriguez, and I am hardheaded."
The family said fire crews believe the fire may have been caused by an electrical issue, but it is still under investigation.
For now, the family is waiting on the investigation, and insurance. They have set up a 'fire fund' at Security State Bank.
