Bexar County inmate dies Wednesday morning, authorities say

Daniel Pentkwoski is the second person to die while jailed in Bexar County this year.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County authorities say a 53-year-old inmate died following some kind of medical episode Wednesday morning, possibly stemming from self-inflicted injuries.

Daniel Pentkwoski was found apparently unresponsive on the floor of his cell by a cadet conducting routine checks, according to officials with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. That cadet notified a superior, and another deputy soon arrived to "perform lifesaving measures."

First responders eventually arrived and pronounced Pentkwoski dead at 10:34 a.m. While an exact cause of death has yet to be determined, BCSO officials say he "appears to have sustained self-inflicted injuries earlier in the day." No further details were provided.

An investigation into Pentkwoski's death will involve BCSO, the district attorney's office and the Texas Rangers, per procedure. He had been jailed since Monday.

Pentkwoski is the second person to have died while behind bars at the Bexar County jail in 2023, after a 31-year-old man took his own life earlier this month.
