Another inmate death reported at Bexar County jail; second in as many days

Sheriff's deputies identified the victim as a 30-year-old.

SAN ANTONIO — A day after Bexar County officials started investigating the jail's sixth inmate death of the year, a case authorities say could be homicide, that number has grown once again.

Officials at the sheriff's office said a 30-year-old inmate died at the facility around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after a 62-year-old inmate was declared dead there Tuesday. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities said the inmate might have taken their own life.

San Antonio fire officials previously told KENS 5 they responded for a cardiac arrest in progress. The Bexar County Precinct 2 Constables Office is conducting an external investigation per the Sandra Bland Act, which requires the state to assign an outside agency to look into custodial deaths. BCSO will conduct additional internal investigations.

Seven inmates have died at the jail so far in 2024 after 12 died there while in Bexar County custody last year.
